David Ortiz Back In Boston After Being Shot

David Ortiz

David Ortiz has safely made it back to Boston for medical care after being ambushed by a gunman at a Dominican Republic bar over the weekend.

The former Red Sox slugger known to fans as "Big Papi" was at the Dial Bar and Lounge in Santo Domingo on Sunday night when the gunman approached him from behind and shot him in the torso.

Ortiz has since spent the past day in stable condition in the ICU at Santo Domingo Hospital. His liver was damaged during the shooting and doctors had remove his gallbladder and part of his intestine. The Boston Red Sox have offered "all available resources" and sent an air ambulance to bring him home to Boston.

“In 2013, when we needed David Ortiz the most, he was there for us. Our focus is on his health and on getting him back here for treatment.” - Red Sox president and CEO Sam Kennedy

His father spoke to press saying he is pleased with the medical attention his son has received so far and is happy he has been transferred to Boston so he can be with his wife and the Red Sox medical team. "He is resting. Big Papi will be around for a long time!" confirmed his father.
