Dolphins Fire Head Coach Adam Gase

CBS 12 -

The Miami Dolphins fired head coach Adam Gase, the team announced Monday.

The Dolphins finished the season with a 7-9 record after losing to the Buffalo Bills on Sunday.

General Manager Chris Grier is being promoted to Executive vice president of football operations, while Mike Tannenbaum will be reassigned within the Dolphins organization. Grier will now be the man in charge of hiring, not only a new head coach, but also a new General Manager.

“I am excited about having Chris lead our football operations going forward,” said Ross. “I want to build a championship organization and I’ve fallen short of that so far. I know I need to take a different approach and I’ve learned that we need a more streamlined structure for accountability and a longer term view on our decision-making. Chris is highly respected throughout football and is an unselfish, team-first leader who knows the game. We need to add to our core of young players and build something special over the long-term and I believe in Chris."

Gase is among several NFL head coaches who received pink slips on Monday. The Denver Broncos fired head coach Vance Joseph after two seasons. Joseph spent one year as the defensive coordinator for the Dolphins before being hired by Denver. The Cincinnati Bengals fired head coach Marvin Lewis. The Arizona Cardinals reportedly fired Steve Wilks. Dirk Koetter is out as head coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

It would seem that the Dolphins’ 41-17 loss to the Buffalo Bills on Sunday is was finally did Gase in. "I didn't make the decision until probably last night", admitted Ross. After that game, (when I was) thinking about it."

"What you want, what I want, is to have an organization that is used to winning,” continued Ross. “Because that's what people in Miami expect. That's what the fans want, and what the fans deserve."

Ross also suggested several times during the press conference that a total rebuild could be the answer, and that it could be three or more years before we could see a consistently winning team in Miami. The search for the Dolphins 13th head coach in their history begins immediately, as does their search for a general manager to work under Grier.

Gase, hired in 2016, went 23-25 in his three seasons with the Dolphins. Miami made the playoffs under Gase in his first season for the first time since 2008. Gase has 16 years of experience in the NFL, with stops in Chicago, Denver, San Francisco, and Detroit.
