Hillsborough County, FL - A 15-year-old student from Strawberry Crest High School in Hillsborough County was arrested Monday morning after school administrators allegedly discovered a handgun in his backpack.
According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, administrators were alerted that the ninth grader may have brought vape pens onto campus.
When they searched his backpack, they found a 9mm semi-automatic pistol. Deputies said the firearm was not loaded and no ammunition was found.
When confronted about the discovery, the student allegedly tried to run away and pushed two school administrators to the ground, injuring them before being detained.
The sheriff’s office confirmed that no threats were made to students or staff during the incident.
The student was arrested and charged with possession of a weapon on school grounds, minor in possession of a firearm, and two counts of battery on a specified official or employee.
He was later taken to the Juvenile Assessment Center.
Sheriff Chad Chronister said the department will continue to prioritize campus safety and that anyone who brings a firearm to school will face consequences.
Officials said the case remains under investigation.
The Hillsborough County School District has not released additional details about disciplinary action but confirmed that the situation was handled quickly to ensure student safety.
