Fort Myers, FL - A 19-year-old man was arrested in Fort Myers after allegedly driving more than 100 miles per hour on the Edison Bridge.
According to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, Santiago Carcamo Londono was stopped on Sunday after radar confirmed he was traveling at 106 mph.
When questioned, Londono allegedly told deputies that his mother had instructed him to hurry and take his passenger home.
He was arrested under Florida’s recently enacted “super speeder” law, which went into effect on July 1st.
The law makes driving over 100 mph a criminal offense, allowing officers to make an immediate arrest rather than issuing a citation.
The incident occurred on the northbound span of the Edison Bridge, a heavily traveled route connecting downtown Fort Myers and North Fort Myers.
No injuries or crashes were reported during the stop, and Londono was taken into custody without further incident.
Authorities say the new legislation aims to curb dangerous driving behavior that has contributed to a rise in fatal crashes across the state.
The Lee County Sheriff’s Office emphasized that driving at extreme speeds poses serious risks to both drivers and other motorists, particularly on bridges and high-traffic areas.
Londono was booked into the Lee County Jail on charges related to reckless driving at excessive speed and is awaiting a court appearance.
Deputies say the case serves as an early example of Florida’s stricter enforcement of high-speed violations.
