Miami-Dade, FL - A large group of individuals was taken into custody in Southwest Miami-Dade after authorities uncovered what they believe to be a significant cockfighting ring operating in the area.

According to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to reports of a disturbance at a rural property near 14287 SW 192nd Street.

When law enforcement arrived, they reportedly witnessed several individuals engaged in a physical fight and observed signs of illegal animal fighting activity involving roosters.

As deputies attempted to intervene, many of the individuals at the scene allegedly fled, some on foot and others in vehicles.

Authorities were able to detain several suspects, including one person who was allegedly found with rooster spurs, sharp bony leg structures commonly associated with cockfighting.

In total, 42 individuals were arrested.

According to the sheriff’s office, those arrested are facing charges related to animal fighting or baiting, as well as resisting arrest without violence.

The investigation also uncovered a significant amount of evidence, including 72 live roosters and $39,147 in cash, which authorities believe was tied to the illegal activity.

Miami-Dade Sheriff Rossie Cordero-Stutz released a statement condemning the incident: “This type of cruelty and illegal activity has no place in our community. Animal fighting is not only inhumane, but often linked to other serious crimes. We remain committed to protecting both the people and the animals of Miami-Dade.”

Officials are urging anyone with knowledge of similar operations to report it to law enforcement.
