South Florida Man Charged After Shooting Couple Over Basketball Hoop

Wellington, FL - A South Florida man is behind bars facing first-degree murder charges after allegedly shooting and killing his neighbors over an argument about a basketball hoop.

The incident occurred on Saturday, May 4th, in the Black Diamond development on Galleria Street.

Deputies arrived at the scene shortly before 5:30 PM to find Tara Marie Jones and Taylor Glenn Jones deceased in their front yard.

According to investigators, a witness reported hearing gunshots and seeing the victims lying on the ground.

They then observed the suspect, identified as 63-year-old Norman Scott, exiting his residence.

When questioned, Scott reportedly admitted to shooting both victims, claiming they had attacked him during an argument about a basketball hoop and property lines.

Scott's home was equipped with exterior surveillance cameras that captured the events leading up to the shooting.

The footage showed Taylor Jones removing yard debris and moving a child's bicycle.

Scott then emerged from his house, seemingly gesturing for Jones to approach.

Investigators noted that Jones approached Scott in a casual manner, with no signs of aggression.

However, the video revealed Scott becoming agitated and yelling while pointing towards the basketball hoop.

The situation escalated quickly. Scott retrieved a handgun, causing Jones to back away with his hands raised.

Despite Jones' attempt to de-escalate, Scott fired multiple shots, even continuing to shoot after Jones fell to the ground.

The affidavit further details Scott turning his weapon on Tara Jones, who was standing on her own property, and shooting her before returning to his house.

As he passed the incapacitated Jones, Scott allegedly fired two more shots.

Forensic examination confirmed Tara Jones suffered three gunshot wounds, while Taylor Jones sustained three as well.

Norman Scott is currently jailed without bond as he awaits trial.

While Scott's attorney maintains his client's innocence and highlights his clean criminal record, investigators believe the video evidence paints a clear picture of the events.
