Postal workers are being put in harm's way. That's according to a Letter Carriers' union president in South Florida.

Jeffrey Wagner tells CBS 12 News that there have been seven armed holdups all within the past six months.

"There seems to be an epidemic going on around the country. This is intolerable. This is a felony being committed against our members."

He says the robberies have taken place in Fort Pierce, Port St. Lucie, West Palm Beach and Vero Beach. Nobody has been shot, but Wagner fears that it may just be a matter of time.

Letter carriers are not allowed to carry firearms and the union has not taken a position on that.

Wagner says the crooks are trying to get their hands on the keys the letter carriers have that get them into open clusters of mailboxes because they want to steal mail.
