Rays Beat Pirates In Extras

The Tampa Bay Rays (38-32) defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates (29-41) 4-3 in ten innings on Friday night at Tropicana Field.

The Rays took a 3-0 lead in the first inning thanks to RBI singles from Luke Raley and Jonathan Aranda. For Aranda, it was a RBI single in his first at bat in the major leagues. The Rays also capitalized on a balk with Luke Raley at third base to make it 3-0.

The Pirates rallied with two solo homers in the fourth, and another from Hoy Park in the fifth, to tie the game 3-3. That would remain the score through nine innings.

After the Pirates did not score in the top of the tenth, it would be Harold Ramirez coming through with a RBI single in the bottom of the tenth to give Tampa Bay the win.

Jeffrey Springs pitched six innings allowing three runs, all of them earned, seven hits while striking out nine and walking none. Jason Adam (1-2, 1.21) got the win after working the top of the tenth inning.

The Rays will now look to make it two in a row against the Pirates on Saturday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 1:10 PM - Neil Solondz begins pregame coverage from Tropicana Field at 12:30 PM on 95.3 WDAE & AM 620.
