A new "diverging diamond" interchange has opened in Boca Raton.

The innovative design allows two directions of traffic on the roadway to temporarily cross to the opposite side of the road and it's designed to ease congestion. The interchange at Glades Road and I-95 cuts down on the need for traffic lights.

The Florida Department of Transportation cites studies that show these interchanges have reduced injury and fatal crashes by up to 55 percent.

There are some others already operating in South Florida and a large number under construction or in the planning states around the state.

Four more are planned for Palm Beach County and two along the Treasure Coast.

Those will be at I-95 and Hypoluxo Road, Lantana Road, Tenth Avenue North, 45th Street, along with I-95 at Kanner Highway in Stuart and Gatlin Boulevard in Port St. Lucie.

Construction on the Glades Road project began in March of 2021.
